Bedre at få tjekket op på vores to pelsede venner lidt for mange gange end lidt for få.
English:
We went to the vet with both Moly and Sandy, because when they go to the vet, rabbits always have to do it together, even if only one rabbit needs to be seen, as the other rabbit would otherwise risk rejecting that rabbit, has been to the vet, because now it smells different, and it is not good if they can no longer accept each other. So as a general rule, you always take all rabbits with you at the same time. They must always have each other, and when they have both been through the same experience, they also smell the same, and thus they go through the process and the experience together as a team. It is very important!
Sandy had a small bump/swelling on her neck that we would like a vet to check on. Such a bump could have been anything. It could be something harmless, but it could also have been something bad that needed to be treated immediately, so it was off to the vet. However, it turned out to be just a swelling from an insect bite, but we had to keep an eye on whether it got worse in the following days, e.g. more red or swelled up more, but it didn't. We were told that it wasn't sure it would go away completely if the tissue had a little trouble healing properly, but it wouldn't bother her in any way. Fortunately, it ended up going away on its own, and after a few days there was no sign of it at all. While both rabbits were now at the vet, both Molly and Sandy also just got a full health check from the vet. Better to check up on our two furry friends a little too often.
We had a new vet who did things a little differently than we were used to, and that made Sandy a lot more nervous and stressed than she usually is. Sandy usually sits very still when she is handled by a vet, where Molly she can find herself looking around and being curious. The surroundings must be examined and sometimes Molly even sits and washes herself or enjoys herself inside the transport by munching on snacks while she waits for it to be her turn to be looked at. However, Molly wasn't quite as comfortable this time either. Otherwise, it was far from the first time that they had been to that animal clinic. But something must have been different, because the rabbits showed signs of more stressed behavior than usual. You cannot avoid stress and nervousness at the vet, but it should not get too bad, because it is a very vulnerable situation for rabbits, who can even suffer a nosedive in their health or even lose their lives due to large amounts of stress. It is therefore very important to listen to your rabbits and try to make it as comfortable as possible for them now that it is necessary to be at the vet. Therefore, after this vet visit, we decided to change vet. We later found a vet in Frederiksværk who we would try to be treated by in the future.
Molly was spry and kept looking into the transport box even though there was no lid on when she had to have a health check. She was clearly looking for a place to crawl to find safety, but since the transport box was the only homely thing apart from Sandy, she went into it but she did not escape being examined. It had to be done, but afterwards she was happy to have some peace, when the lid was put back on the transport box and we were done at the vet.
It turned out that Molly had one slightly sharp tooth on the right side which had to be seen again no later than 2 months after this visit to discover in time if it would lead to locked jaws over time. Sandy's lump/bump was examined. It was initially just a tick bite, but we had to keep an eye on it so that it didn't swell up any more, but as long as it only got smaller over time, it was fine, even if scar tissue could form and thus never disappear 100%, but we had to make sure that keep a close eye on it so it wouldn't develop into an abscess.
The vet said that if there were many ticks attacking the rabbits, you could get some solid pellets-like something that you could feed with which was for dogs and cats, but which was also suitable for rabbits according to vets, but which had to be ordered on prescription.
Molly definitely didn't like having the big thingy stuck in her mouth that was used to look at her teeth. She put up a lot of resistance. She thinks it was extremely uncomfortable that her mouth was forced open in that way and that the plastic thingy was inserted into her mouth. She chewed on it quite a bit and this made it difficult for the vet to see the teeth, but in the end it was successful. Molly was happy to finally be free of the many examinations. They were both weighed, had teeth, claws, ears, eyes checked and then Sandy had the bump on the neck (bug bite) checked and everything seemed fine. We just had to check Molly's starting sharp tooth in a few months, which we then did at the animal clinic in Frederiksværk.
Sandy sat very still and had very rapid breathing most of the time we spent on this animal clinic which was a clear sign. She was shrunk in one corner of the transport box. It was heartbreaking to see. Therefore, we changed permanent vets, which turned out to be a good decision. You must listen to your four-legged friends. They tell you everything you need to know.
