GI Stasis - the silent killer

GI Stasis - help my rabbit is sick! NB. The information is also our own experience with the rabbits.

The most important feed - hay and straw

Hay and straw for your bunnies The diet pyramid for rabbits Hay and straw are the most important diet you can give your rabbit. It must live mainly from hay and straw, and in fact 80% of its diet must consist of hay and straw. As this diet pyramid shows (shown below), it should actually only have 10% green a day and this also applies in the summer, although you could quickly be tempted by all the delicious grass that you think the rabbit should have.  No, it is definitely not a good idea to replace hay and straw with grass, even in summer. We made this mistake once and it had consequences, so now we will tell you how important it is to give as much hay and straw as possible. If the rabbit gets too much grass, it can risk getting too much gas in the stomach, which can result in GI Stasis, and it can be fatal for the rabbit. As a general rule, the rabbit should eat a pile of tightly packed hay / straw that is the size of it itself. This gives a better visual view of how much hay and stra

The worst 24 hours of our lives

It was such a bad day Molly is sick It all started with the fact that yesterday we discovered that Molly did not feel well. We came to cuddle and care for the rabbits as we usually do but it was there that the worst 24 hours of our lives started and from that second on we would experience a variety of incidents. Most of them were negative and bad and some you never want to experience again. We immediately started nursing Molly. She should be back on her feet as soon as possible. But Molly had tried this before and so she was good at handling it or else she hadn't eaten as much of what made her sick as Sandy had but that doesn't mean they should ever experience it again if it can be avoided. We will of course do everything possible to avoid it in the future. Some water was boiled for her which stood and cooled for about 5-10 minutes. We have discovered that the rabbits really like cooled boiled water when they don´t feel well. She drank a lot of water and when she was done we ha

An extra birthday party for the buns

Happy extra birthday! Since it was Great Day Of Prayer today, we thought we would invite some guests so the rabbits could be celebrated again. Last Monday we wanted to be able to spend as much time with the rabbits as possible, so we decided to find another day where we could get some guests to visit, so that they could also greet Sandy and Molly and wish them happy birthday. It was super nice and we baked an apple cake for the guests, since the rabbits love apple, so we had better eat a cake to indicate that we celebrated them. After all, it won't work if we sat down and ate chocolate cake on their birthday  The guests came with some gifts they received, which was a blend of dried vegetables and root vegetables, dried nettles and some dandelions. They were delighted with the gifts and hugged it pretty quickly. We also closed them a quick walk out into the garden so they could stretch their legs a little. The guests sat watching and enjoying themselves while the rabbits ran around

Vet visit

Health check of the rabbits  Today the vet was just over to check on Sandy and Molly. We have found a mobile veterinarian who comes home to examine the animal so you avoid stressing the animal too much, and then we thought it would be good for the rabbits, especially because rabbits are prey and therefore cannot be among other animals such as dogs and cats. In the van she came in there was a small mobile clinic that had the main tools she needed to examine an animal and it impressed me how many things that actually could be in such a small van.  It was a long time since we had a visit of a vet so it was good to finally get another perspective and hear if they were well and she said they were absolutely perfect and she praised us a lot for everything we have done for them and it makes me so happy to hear. They were both fit and healthy, and couldn't have been much better. They had no vermin in the fur, fine eyes, fine ears, good heart, great teeth and claws and they were neit

Sandy and Molly are now 4 years old!

Happy 4th birthday buns! It was the rabbits' birthday today and they got themselves some exciting gifts that I hope they will use. We came and woke them up with birthday songs made specially for them and with flags in hand that we flagged with on our way through the garden to let them out in the rabbit run.  They received both a gift from Maxi Zoo and a gift from each of us owners to each our rabbit. They seemed happy with their gifts, and they immediately began to peel open the packaging and goof what was inside. The first gift they got was in the morning and they both got a small bag of apple snacks. The first gift was from Maxi Zoo and they also managed to eat a good handful of snacks before we had to stop them. The other gift for Molly was a small pile of dried sticks made of grass and a grass carrot. We gave them lots of grass and an orderly pile of dandelion flowers during the day. In the morning while we let the rabbits out in their rabbit run we decorated their entire rabbi
