Sleepover with the bunnies

A night full of fun This weekend became the evening for a spontaneous sleepover in the rabbits' run. And yes, the rabbit run is big enough to sleep a few people in there (about 21 km2). We had gone and played a bit with the idea before but Friday was the perfect day and night to make a sleepover in Sandy and Molly's home. However, this was not the first time we had tried to sleep with them. We did it a few years ago too but now it was time to do it again. And the weather was PERFECT so what more could you want? The heat wave was over us and it had been 29 degrees that day but the temperature dropped all the way down to 13 degrees at night but it did not matter as the rabbits warmed our hearts. The sky was starry, the wind had died down and the last birds were chirping in the distance. Nice quiet night. Molly and Sandy also welcomed us really well when we started moving in with them with all our stuff. It was not like they got angry and wanted us out of their homes again. No, o...

A binkying bunny is a happy bunny

My rabbit makes funny jumps  What is a binky? A binky is when the rabbit jumps up in the air and turns the body a bit. This can be done in many different ways, so there is not one particular hop that is a binky. Sometimes the rabbit jumps up in the air and strikes out with both hind legs to the side or runs at full speed, jumping up into the air and doing a twist. Why do rabbits make binkies? The rabbit simply makes this hilarious hop of pure zeal and joy. It is happy and content to be alive. When the rabbit makes a binky, it shows you that it is happy and that you have done something right as a rabbit owner. If you have seen this, then you have witnessed the rabbit's joy, as it shows by this very clear sign in the body language. Usually, the body language of rabbits is not at all as clear as when they are happy in this way. Times when the rabbit makes binkies There is no definite time that the rabbit makes more binkies than others, but it is more often seen that rabbits that are p...

Playing in the conservatory

Fun with the buns A few days ago we thought it had been a long time since Sandy and Molly had been in the conservatory to we decided they should go on an adventure as it otherwise said it was a very long time ago (like 1 year ago). The conservatory very messy so we quickly cleaned up everything. They are excellent motivation to get something done. We put a lot of blankets, baskets, caves and mattresses to make them feel at home, and then we rabbit secured it all so we did not risk them getting hurt. It tends to be a fair temperature in the conservatory so we chose to take them in in the morning so there was the same temperature inside as there was outside. Molly was a little scared to walk on the stone floor to begin with but after a while she just became sure on her paws. Generally, she has had a slight fear of walking on laminate flooring and other hard / slippery floors. We have a theory that it is because she slipped around a lot when she was young and then she has not had the ...

Circadian rhythm

Rabbits’ sleep compared to humans Rabbits are a special animal that has an unusual circadian rhythm. They don't sleep a whole night like we humans do. Instead, they sleep for shorter periods of time so that they can more easily be prepared for predators. They therefore wake up once in a while to make sure everything is as it should be. In addition, rabbits sleep with open eyes which we humans do not do either. Rabbits are approx. active for 12-16 hours every day. They are most active in the morning and evening hours because most predators are either hunting when it's daytime or at night so it's the perfect time to find food as there will be less risk of predators nearby. They feel most secure coming out of the caves at dusk when they live in the wild. The predators prefer not to hunt at these times as the sun often dazzles them. Domestic rabbits often follow the same rhythm as the wild ones. It is an advantage for rabbits to be able to lie down and relax when it is the h...

10 things to cool off your rabbit in hot weather

10 things you can do to cool off your rabbit  1. Lots of water Water is vital for the rabbit to always have! Plenty of it is always good and very much like in large water bowls so it is so natural for it to drink. There is also easier access to an open water bowl than if it were a drinking bottle. The rabbit will easily overlook and forget the beverage bottle and then it will be more likely to dehydrate. 2. Shade Shade is also a very important factor if it is to feel good in the hot weather. It is very important not to have full sun on it all the time as it will quickly dehydrate if it is too hot. So always provide shade. 3. Sand We use a lot of sand on our own rabbits as it is a natural and appropriate way to cool the rabbit. Our rabbits love to roll in the lovely cool and moist sand so we give it plenty of opportunity. The sand can be laid on the ground (if it is an outdoor rabbit) in a place where there is also plenty of wind. It gives the best result. If it is an indoor rabbit ...

Herbs - the ultimate health help

Herbs are wonderful to your health I will make a small list of the herbs that are good for rabbits and that have some holding-healing properties in form of, using the immune system, the body's systems, provide some important vitamins, etc. All these plants and herbs are something rabbits can tolerate to eat, but it is only in limited quantities. Dried dandelion roots They contain both A, B, C and D vitamins, there are some important vitamins that can be used to maintain, for example, the immune system. Vitamin D is important even if the rabbit is outside and it is very important if you have an indoor rabbit as it helps with native skin, teeth and fur. Dandelions is said to being able to prevent and even cure cancer. However, this has not been demonstrated but it is worth the try if you are sick, right? It has the property of helping to remove gift items in the body and they can even remove varicose veins. If you have problems with gallbladder, kidney or handle, then the roots could...

GI Stasis - the silent killer

GI Stasis - help my rabbit is sick! NB. The information is also our own experience with the rabbits.

The most important feed - hay and straw

Hay and straw for your bunnies The diet pyramid for rabbits Hay and straw are the most important diet you can give your rabbit. It must live mainly from hay and straw, and in fact 80% of its diet must consist of hay and straw. As this diet pyramid shows (shown below), it should actually only have 10% green a day and this also applies in the summer, although you could quickly be tempted by all the delicious grass that you think the rabbit should have.  No, it is definitely not a good idea to replace hay and straw with grass, even in summer. We made this mistake once and it had consequences, so now we will tell you how important it is to give as much hay and straw as possible. If the rabbit gets too much grass, it can risk getting too much gas in the stomach, which can result in GI Stasis, and it can be fatal for the rabbit. As a general rule, the rabbit should eat a pile of tightly packed hay / straw that is the size of it itself. This gives a better visual view of how much hay and ...

The worst 24 hours of our lives

It was such a bad day Molly is sick It all started with the fact that yesterday we discovered that Molly did not feel well. We came to cuddle and care for the rabbits as we usually do but it was there that the worst 24 hours of our lives started and from that second on we would experience a variety of incidents. Most of them were negative and bad and some you never want to experience again. We immediately started nursing Molly. She should be back on her feet as soon as possible. But Molly had tried this before and so she was good at handling it or else she hadn't eaten as much of what made her sick as Sandy had but that doesn't mean they should ever experience it again if it can be avoided. We will of course do everything possible to avoid it in the future. Some water was boiled for her which stood and cooled for about 5-10 minutes. We have discovered that the rabbits really like cooled boiled water when they don´t feel well. She drank a lot of water and when she was done we ha...

An extra birthday party for the buns

Happy extra birthday! Since it was Great Day Of Prayer today, we thought we would invite some guests so the rabbits could be celebrated again. Last Monday we wanted to be able to spend as much time with the rabbits as possible, so we decided to find another day where we could get some guests to visit, so that they could also greet Sandy and Molly and wish them happy birthday. It was super nice and we baked an apple cake for the guests, since the rabbits love apple, so we had better eat a cake to indicate that we celebrated them. After all, it won't work if we sat down and ate chocolate cake on their birthday  The guests came with some gifts they received, which was a blend of dried vegetables and root vegetables, dried nettles and some dandelions. They were delighted with the gifts and hugged it pretty quickly. We also closed them a quick walk out into the garden so they could stretch their legs a little. The guests sat watching and enjoying themselves while the rabbits ran around ...

Vet visit

Health check of the rabbits  Today the vet was just over to check on Sandy and Molly. We have found a mobile veterinarian who comes home to examine the animal so you avoid stressing the animal too much, and then we thought it would be good for the rabbits, especially because rabbits are prey and therefore cannot be among other animals such as dogs and cats. In the van she came in there was a small mobile clinic that had the main tools she needed to examine an animal and it impressed me how many things that actually could be in such a small van.  It was a long time since we had a visit of a vet so it was good to finally get another perspective and hear if they were well and she said they were absolutely perfect and she praised us a lot for everything we have done for them and it makes me so happy to hear. They were both fit and healthy, and couldn't have been much better. They had no vermin in the fur, fine eyes, fine ears, good heart, great teeth and claws and they were...

Sandy and Molly are now 4 years old!

Happy 4th birthday buns! It was the rabbits' birthday today and they got themselves some exciting gifts that I hope they will use. We came and woke them up with birthday songs made specially for them and with flags in hand that we flagged with on our way through the garden to let them out in the rabbit run.  They received both a gift from Maxi Zoo and a gift from each of us owners to each our rabbit. They seemed happy with their gifts, and they immediately began to peel open the packaging and goof what was inside. The first gift they got was in the morning and they both got a small bag of apple snacks. The first gift was from Maxi Zoo and they also managed to eat a good handful of snacks before we had to stop them. The other gift for Molly was a small pile of dried sticks made of grass and a grass carrot. We gave them lots of grass and an orderly pile of dandelion flowers during the day. In the morning while we let the rabbits out in their rabbit run we decorated their entire rabbi...

Cute photos

Keep the good spirit  Here are just some pictures of the cute rabbits that might lift your mood a little. Sandy and Molly are doing well, despite the many changes there are for us others. We try to minimize changes and stress as much as we can so that they are not affected as much. They jump around, and have a really good time. The sun is finally coming, and the heat comes quietly too, and the rabbits love it. They run and jump around like never before. So they just love spring. When all the trees and plants grow and soon they become green so the rabbits can eat them. That's what they're waiting for.   "Where there's light there's hope." Molly sees hope in the sunlight Molly is happy and makes a binky Sandy is ready for a run so she runs with high speed Sandy looking angelic in the sunlight Tired after a loong run. Time to a nap Family dinner in the backyard Molly saw the camera and decided to make a funny face
